1 Chronicles, Chapter 22

David names the place of the house of Hashem and gathers stone, iron, bronze, cedar, gold and silver for it, then charges his son Shlomo to build it, since he himself had shed much blood, and commands the princes of Israel to help Shlomo.

22:1Then David said, “This is the house of Hashem God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel.”

David prepares materials

22:2And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God.

22:3And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the joinings; and bronze in abundance without weight;

22:4Also cedar trees in abundance: for the Tzidonim (Zidonians) and they of Tzor (Tyre) brought much cedar wood to David.

22:5And David said, “Shlomo (Solomon) my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for Hashem must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it.” So David prepared abundantly before his death.

David charges Shlomo

22:6Then he called for Shlomo his son, and charged him to build a house for Hashem God of Israel.

22:7And David said to Shlomo, “My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build a house unto the name of Hashem my God:

22:8But the word of Hashem came to me, saying, ‘You have shed blood abundantly, and have made great wars: you shall not build a house unto My name, because you have shed much blood upon the earth in My sight.

22:9Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Shlomo, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.

22:10He shall build a house for My name; and he shall be My son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.’

22:11Now, my son, Hashem be with you; and prosper, and build the house of Hashem your God, as He has said of you.

22:12Only Hashem give you wisdom and understanding, and give you charge concerning Israel, that you may keep the Torah of Hashem your God.

22:13Then shall you prosper, if you take heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which Hashem charged Moshe (Moses) with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed.

22:14Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of Hashem a hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of bronze and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and you may add thereto.

22:15Moreover there are workmen with you in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work.

22:16Of the gold, the silver, and the bronze, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and Hashem be with you.”

A charge to the princes

22:17David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Shlomo his son, saying,

22:18“Is not Hashem your God with you? and has He not given you rest on every side? for He has given the inhabitants of the land into my hand; and the land is subdued before Hashem, and before His people.

22:19Now set your heart and your soul to seek Hashem your God; arise therefore, and build the sanctuary of Hashem God, to bring the ark of the covenant of Hashem, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of Hashem.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Chronicles they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 5, 6 and 12; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
Commentary
Written for our Wednesday Tenakh study from a Messianic Jewish perspective, in line with the Benei Avraham Statement of Faith. It reads the passage first in its Torah setting, then with the Sages, and then with the witness of the Brit Hadashah. Its sources include the Talmud and Midrash, Rashi, Radak, Rambam, the First Fruits of Zion End of Days lessons, and teachings of Rabbi Efraim Palvanov and Ariel Cohen Alloro. Numerical readings (gematria) are offered as hints, not proofs. The notes here are short versions of our full 1 Chronicles commentary, which is a draft for our teachers to review.
