1 Chronicles, Chapter 15

David prepares a tent for the Ark and gathers the priests and the Levi’im, who sanctify themselves and carry it on their shoulders as Moshe commanded. Heman, Asaf and Etan and their brethren are appointed singers and musicians, the Ark is brought up to the city of David with joy, and Michal looks on.

15:1And David made him houses in the city of David, and prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched for it a tent.

15:2Then David said, “None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levi’im (Levites): for them has Hashem chosen to carry the ark of Hashem, and to minister unto Him for ever.”

15:3And David gathered all Israel together to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), to bring up the ark of Hashem unto his place, which he had prepared for it.

The priests and the Levi’im

15:4And David assembled the children of Aharon (Aaron), and the Levi’im:

15:5Of the sons of Kehat (Kohath); Uri’el (Uriel) the chief, and his brethren a hundred and twenty:

15:6Of the sons of Merari; Asayah (Asaiah) the chief, and his brethren two hundred and twenty:

15:7Of the sons of Gershom; Yo’el (Joel) the chief, and his brethren a hundred and thirty:

15:8Of the sons of Elitzafan (Elizaphan); Shema’yah (Shemaiah) the chief, and his brethren two hundred:

15:9Of the sons of Chevron (Hebron); Eli’el (Eliel) the chief, and his brethren eighty:

15:10Of the sons of Uzzi’el (Uzziel); Amminadav (Amminadab) the chief, and his brethren a hundred and twelve.

15:11And David called for Tzadok (Zadok) and Evyatar (Abiathar) the priests, and for the Levi’im, for Uri’el, Asayah, and Yo’el, Shema’yah, and Eli’el, and Amminadav,

15:12And said unto them, “You are the chief of the fathers of the Levi’im: sanctify yourselves, both you and your brethren, that you may bring up the ark of Hashem God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it.

15:13For because you did it not at the first, Hashem our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought Him not after the due order.”

15:14So the priests and the Levi’im sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of Hashem God of Israel.

15:15And the children of the Levi’im bore the ark of God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moshe (Moses) commanded according to the word of Hashem.

The singers and musicians

15:16And David spoke to the chief of the Levi’im to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of music, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.

15:17So the Levi’im appointed Heman the son of Yo’el; and of his brethren, Asaf (Asaph) the son of Berechyahu (Berechiah); and of the sons of Merari their brethren, Etan (Ethan) the son of Kushayahu (Kushaiah);

15:18And with them their brethren of the second degree, Zecharyahu (Zechariah), Ben, and Ya’azi’el (Jaaziel), and Shemiramot (Shemiramoth), and Yechi’el (Jehiel), and Uni (Unni), Eli’av (Eliab), and Benayahu (Benaiah), and Ma’aseyahu (Maaseiah), and Matityahu (Mattithiah), and Elifelehu (Elipheleh), and Mikneyahu (Mikneiah), and Oved-Edom (Obed-edom), and Ye’i’el (Jeiel), the porters.

15:19So the singers, Heman, Asaf, and Etan, were appointed to sound with cymbals of bronze;

15:20And Zecharyah, and Azi’el (Aziel), and Shemiramot, and Yechi’el, and Uni, and Eli’av, and Ma’aseyahu, and Benayahu, with psalteries on Alamoth;

15:21And Matityahu, and Elifelehu, and Mikneyahu, and Oved-Edom, and Ye’i’el, and Azazyahu (Azaziah), with harps on the Sheminith to excel.

15:22And Kenanyahu (Chenaniah), chief of the Levi’im, was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful.

15:23And Berechyah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark.

15:24And Shevanyahu (Shebaniah), and Yoshafat (Jehoshaphat), and Netan’el (Nethaneel), and Amasai, and Zecharyahu, and Benayahu, and Eli’ezer (Eliezer), the priests, did blow with the trumpets before the ark of God: and Oved-Edom and Yechiyah (Jehiah) were doorkeepers for the ark.

The Ark comes up with joy

15:25So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of Hashem out of the house of Oved-Edom with joy.

15:26And it came to pass, when God helped the Levi’im that bore the ark of the covenant of Hashem, that they offered seven bullocks and seven rams.

15:27And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levi’im that bore the ark, and the singers, and Kenanyah the master of the song with the singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen.

15:28Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of Hashem with shouting, and with sound of the shofar (cornet), and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps.

15:29And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of Hashem came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Shaul (Saul) looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing: and she despised him in her heart.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Chronicles they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 5, 6 and 12; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
Commentary
Written for our Wednesday Tenakh study from a Messianic Jewish perspective, in line with the Benei Avraham Statement of Faith. It reads the passage first in its Torah setting, then with the Sages, and then with the witness of the Brit Hadashah. Its sources include the Talmud and Midrash, Rashi, Radak, Rambam, the First Fruits of Zion End of Days lessons, and teachings of Rabbi Efraim Palvanov and Ariel Cohen Alloro. Numerical readings (gematria) are offered as hints, not proofs. The notes here are short versions of our full 1 Chronicles commentary, which is a draft for our teachers to review.
