Text (469) 608-99441 Chronicles, Chapter 10
The Pelishtim defeat Israel on mount Gilboa, where Shaul and his sons die; the Pelishtim strip the slain and fasten Shaul’s head in the temple of Dagon, the valiant men of Yavesh Gil’ad bury the bodies, and the kingdom is turned to David the son of Yishai.
10:1Now the Pelishtim (Philistines) fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Pelishtim, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.
10:2And the Pelishtim followed hard after Shaul (Saul), and after his sons; and the Pelishtim slew Yonatan (Jonathan), and Avinadav (Abinadab), and Malki-Shua (Malchi-shua), the sons of Shaul.
10:3And the battle went sore against Shaul, and the archers hit him, and he was wounded of the archers.
10:4Then said Shaul to his armourbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me.” But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. So Shaul took a sword, and fell upon it.
10:5And when his armourbearer saw that Shaul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.
10:6So Shaul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.
10:7And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Shaul and his sons were dead, then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Pelishtim came and dwelt in them.
10:8And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Pelishtim came to strip the slain, that they found Shaul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa.
10:9And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Pelishtim round about, to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people.
10:10And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.
10:11And when all Yavesh Gil’ad (Jabesh-gilead) heard all that the Pelishtim had done to Shaul,
10:12They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Shaul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Yavesh, and buried their bones under the terebinth in Yavesh, and fasted seven days.
10:13So Shaul died for his transgression which he committed against Hashem, even against the word of Hashem, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire of it;
10:14And inquired not of Hashem: therefore He slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Yishai (Jesse).

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Chronicles they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 5, 6 and 12; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
- Commentary
- Written for our Wednesday Tenakh study from a Messianic Jewish perspective, in line with the Benei Avraham Statement of Faith. It reads the passage first in its Torah setting, then with the Sages, and then with the witness of the Brit Hadashah. Its sources include the Talmud and Midrash, Rashi, Radak, Rambam, the First Fruits of Zion End of Days lessons, and teachings of Rabbi Efraim Palvanov and Ariel Cohen Alloro. Numerical readings (gematria) are offered as hints, not proofs. The notes here are short versions of our full 1 Chronicles commentary, which is a draft for our teachers to review. They are shown by default; tap Commentary to hide them.
